I'm in it, But I'm Not in the Room: Guide for Growing Businesses

Black entrepreneurs—both men and women—are starting businesses at higher rates than any other demographic group. Many start out of necessity, personal vision, or community need. But access to capital remains one of the biggest barriers to long-term growth. Most Black founders begin as solopreneurs, funding their businesses from personal savings or side jobs. Not because they lack drive or ideas, but because they face systemic bias in the lending and investing landscape.

Step 1: Validate Your Business Model

Why it Matters: Without validation, you're guessing. With it, you're building with confidence.

Growth without proof is just expensive trial and error. At this point, you should have clear evidence that your business solves a real problem — and that people are willing to pay for your solution.
This is about more than vibes. It's about feedback, traction, and data. Whether you've been winging it or selling inconsistently, this step helps you sharpen your offer and focus on what's working.

💡 Reflection Questions

  • Who is your customer and what problem are you solving?
  • What proof do you have that they will pay for it?
  • Are people buying, or just saying they're interested?
  • What part of your offer is most in demand right now?
  • What's the simplest version of your product or service that gets results?

Step 2: Get Legit -- Compliance & Operations

Why it Matters: You don't want to grow into chaos. Set the foundation now.

Formalizing your business, setting up operations, and maintaining compliance protects your work, builds credibility, and prepares you for funding or partnerships. Strong operations = freedom.

✅ Checklist

  • Register your business and get your EIN
  • Open a business bank account
  • Set up a simple bookkeeping system
  • Create one repeatable process as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
  • Review basic compliance: taxes, licenses, insurance

💡 Reflection Questions

  • What systems need to be in place for me to scale?
  • Am I operating legally and protecting my business?

Step 3: Price & Package with Intention

Why it Matters: If your pricing doesn't work, neither will your business.

You're not just selling products—you're selling outcomes. Make sure your prices reflect the value and the cost of delivering it. And stop giving away transformation for free.

✅ Checklist

  • Fill out the Pricing Strategy Worksheet
  • Identify your Offer Suite (core, entry, premium)
  • Map your Customer Journey to align with offers
  • Calculate your minimum viable income
  • Test and adjust pricing with real customers

💡 Reflection Questions

  • Does my pricing reflect the value I provide?
  • What would my business look like if I charged what I'm really worth?

Step 4: Brand to Connect

Why it Matters: Branding builds trust—and trust builds sales.

Your brand is how people feel about your business before they ever buy from you. It's not just a logo — it's your story, your style, your vibe, and your values. It's how you stand out and how people remember you.

✅ Checklist

  • Identify 3 core brand words that describe your business
  • Build or update your brand kit (logo, fonts, colors)
  • Create a simple brand message that resonates
  • Audit your visuals and voice for consistency
  • Ask 3 people if your brand feels like YOU

💡 Reflection Questions

  • What does my brand say about me before I speak?
  • Does my brand attract the right people or confuse them?

Step 5: Build Your Support Stack

Why it Matters: Growth without support = burnout.

You can't do it all — and you shouldn't try. Your business needs systems and people, not just hustle. This step is about identifying what to delegate, systematize, or automate so you can spend time where it counts.

✅ Checklist

  • List all current business tasks and who owns them
  • *(Don't just put 'Me' next to each one. Find someone else to list even if it's your kids, family or friends)*
  • Write 1 SOP for a task you do often
  • Start using a time-tracking tool for 1 week
  • Identify your dream team (who you need next)

💡 Reflection Questions

  • What tasks drain my energy the most?
  • Who can I bring in to help me grow?

Step 6: Launch & Experiment

Why it Matters: Real growth comes from trying, learning, and adjusting.

There's no perfect plan — only progress. Whether you're launching for the first time or reintroducing your brand, this step helps you do it with intention and agility. Test small, learn fast, grow smart.

✅ Checklist

  • Choose 1 offer to focus your launch around
  • Map out a 30-day marketing and sales plan
  • Track 3 key metrics (ex: leads, conversions, revenue)
  • Document what worked — and what didn't
  • Plan your next experiment based on data

💡 Reflection Questions

  • What's the smallest test I can run this week?
  • What am I most afraid of messing up — and what's the worst that could happen?
